The topic for today’s blog post comes from a suggestion by the delightful Kerry Aitken, one of the hard-working organisers of last year’s AICM markets in Gympie.
If you’ve read my ‘About’ page, you’ll know that my name is Bronwyn, with Bonnie just a nickname. Some people call me Bronwyn, some call me Bonnie, and others swap between the two. Kerry, however, has always known me as Bonnie, so when I called myself Bronwyn over the phone one day, I left her temporarily scratching her head wondering just who was speaking to her!
Bronwyn isn’t the most popular of names in my experience, but I did find myself at school with another Bronwyn. Our friends started calling me Bonnie then to differentiate between the two of us and the name just stuck.
After leaving school, I met another Bronwyn – one of the other bridesmaids at my sister’s wedding! To make things more confusing, this Bronwyn was already known by all as Bonnie so I went back to being Bronwyn.
When it came time to decide on a name for my business, ‘Bonnie’ was the clear favourite, and so it went on.
I do smile when I think of what a brother-in-law of mine used to call me. He had trouble pronouncing Bronwyn, so would instead just say, “Come on, bunny rabbit!” Neither of us knew at the time that my future would involve production of candy Easter eggs!
So, what’s the bottom line with Bronwyn vs Bonnie? Well, with Pancake Day coming up on Tuesday next week, I recall the words of my father, who had the best advice for this situation: you can call me Bronwyn, you can call me Bonnie, you can even call me Bron, just please…
“don’t call me late for pancakes!”
