Earlier this year a customer came to me with an idea. Having been married the year before, she wanted to order a cake to celebrate her first wedding anniversary, and for this cake to be both our own creation, and a complete surprise to her husband.
We started with a colour theme: copper and a sort of ‘Wedgwood’ blue. Something a little bit different and far removed from their ivory-on-ivory wedding cake. My customer left me in charge of flowers, saying that she would be happy with whatever type of flower I decided to make.
I chose a camellia flower. I had never made one before, and thought it would look lovely in a rich, copper tone. We decided on three flowers in total. Although I can see some room for improvement, I’m quite happy with how the camellias turned out!
Knowing that she has a great love of birds, I was not at all surprised when my customer decided that she would like to add a pair of handmade birds to the top of the cake. I made a stencil to cut the birds out of flower paste, and loved the way they perched sweetly on the top tier. As a last minute addition, I painted small blue wings onto the birds, continuing the copper and blue theme.
The cake itself was made from two tiers in a larger height than standard tiers, and covered with a blue-coloured, white chocolate fondant. The flavour chosen was a gluten and gelatine free lime & coconut cake, with lime syrup and buttercream filling.
Here’s the final creation:
