Vintage or ‘modern-vintage’ wedding cakes can completely transform the look and feel of your wedding reception, adding timeless elegance and a touch of romance. It’s no wonder this is such a popular theme at the moment!
As a cake decorator, it’s always interesting to take note of elements that remain popular over the years versus those that are quickly left in a time-warp, and to see how particular styles are updated with a fresh twist to make them more appealing to the modern-couple.
Much more on the side of ‘vintage’ than ‘modern-vintage’, the cake I have to share with you today comes from the vault of my October 1993 wedding cakes! Let’s take a look…
The cake itself is made up of a 10″ round and a 6″ domed fruit cake. Decorated with purple flower paste roses and other filler flowers, the top tier also features piped scallop string work. Variations of this type of string work are seen on a number of modern vintage wedding cakes.
The bottom tier has a collar extending out around the top and bottom, with 4″ high extension work joining the two collars all the way around the cake. This beautiful but extremely time-consuming technique is rarely requested these days!
Roses are another timeless addition to many wedding cakes, including modern-vintage styles. Featured on this cake are 32 large, purple flower paste roses, along with other filler flowers and leaves forming a border around the very bottom of the cake.
Finally, another design element which hasn’t fared as well against the test of time can be seen connecting the top and bottom tiers. The upside down crown, made to resemble a lamp shade, was made in 8 pieces and nicely complemented the collar and extension work.
It was a great relief when this Rockhampton wedding cake was delivered safely to the reception site! Travelling over a very bumpy road, the drive, which would normally take only 5 minutes, ended up taking 30 minutes – though it felt like much longer!
While it may not be appealing to a couple looking for a more modern take on vintage wedding cakes, you can see how some elements from the cake pictured have been updated and carried through to today’s popular styles.
