I received a huge compliment earlier this year at the Mothar Mountain Hall, located just south of Gympie. Usually I aim to be invisible on a wedding day. I coordinate delivery times with venue staff ahead of time to ensure that delivery and set up is completed before any guests arrive. On this particular occasion, though, the bride-to-be had arranged to meet me at the hall ahead of time.
When Veronica (the bride) arrived, we went inside and I set her completed cake down onto the table. She had an idea of what the cake would look like, as it was inspired by one of my previous cakes. On seeing it in person, though, Veronica’s tears of happiness let me know without a doubt that I had created her perfect wedding cake. It was such a wonderful moment, and I will admit to shedding a tear or two of my own as we shared a hug.
There are two reasons why Veronica’s reaction was so special and will be a moment that I look back on and treasure. The first is probably pretty obvious! I’m not usually around to see the reaction of my brides and grooms to seeing their cakes. I genuinely love to hear from them after their wedding to hear how the cake was enjoyed both in look and in taste. But this obviously isn’t the same as seeing their reaction in person.
Creating cakes for such special moments in people’s lives is an honour. Yes, it is my job, and one that can be challenging and stressful at times, but it is also so rewarding and exciting. I love getting to know so many beautiful people and sharing in their joy. I love sharing in their excitement as the wedding day approaches, and I think about them on the day itself – “Oh, the ceremony is just about to begin!”, and “They should have seen their cake by now!” I’ve been doing this for over three decades now, and each and every couple and their wedding cake is just as important to me as the ones that came before.
The second reason that Veronica’s reaction was such a compliment is that butterflies hold a special significance for this couple, with the dragonflies also having a special meaning. Without sharing a story that is not mine to share, I will say that it was so wonderful to know that I had gotten this very important detail right.
This cake was a joy to create. It came together so beautifully – every handmade butterfly, the baking, filling, and covering of both tiers – everything. This was a dream to create and deliver, and one that I will never forget. My greatest thanks and warmest wishes go to the bride and groom who allowed me to share in their joy, and create their perfect wedding cake. Thank you Veronica & Mav – congratulations and all the very best to you.
